December 14, 2021 – The 2021 Training Practices Report presenting the results from the fourth MarTID survey is now available on MarTID.org. The historic survey initiative studies global maritime training practices, investment and thought. With respect to the pandemic, the 2021 MarTID survey was designed to uncover the challenges that have arisen and the industry’s response to those challenges, but also attempts to understand how those challenges and responses will permanently shape the future of maritime training.

This year’s findings indicate that training budgets decreased for ship operators while those for Maritime Education and Training institutions increased. Results also showed that seafarers are increasingly paying for their own training. The findings reflected the significant impact of COVID-19 on seafarers, including that face-to-face classroom training continues to decline as e-learning usage grows, and that COVID-19 has negatively impacted opinions about seafaring as a career.

Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University, welcomed the fourth annual report, saying: “WMU, and our partners on the MarTID project, are committed to ensuring that the historic and ground-breaking MarTID survey initiative continues to provide annual insights to the evolution of maritime training. I express my sincere gratitude to all who contributed their time and input to this important survey.”

In the Foreword, Mr John Allen, Director of Maritime Professional Development for Carnival Corporation & plc, stated: “While it is difficult to make definitive statements on the future, it’s not a stretch to say that everything has changed, including the way in which the maritime community trains its seafarers.” He noted that while COVID effectively shuttered much of the world, seafarers remained in compliance, facing the challenges of COVID while continuing to ensure shipping’s role in the global supply chain.

The MarTID reports are available free of charge on the MarTID website and are distributed widely to reach a global audience. The surveys draw on insights from shipowners and operators, maritime education and training institutions and seafarers. The survey response rate in 2021 increased 60% over the previous year’s number of respondents.

About MarTID
MarTID – the global Maritime Training Insights Database is designed to provide a global picture of maritime training that is not available elsewhere, offering the global maritime community data on current and emerging training trends and techniques, staffing models, training focus areas, training tools, training resource allocation and assessment practices. MarTID is a non-commercial initiative collaboratively founded in 2017 by the World Maritime University, Marine Learning Systems and New Wave Media.

The objective of MarTID is to help ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable maritime operations on clean oceans. It will do so by providing the maritime industry with comprehensive data on how it manages and conducts training for shipboard competencies and the effects of drivers, such as technology, on this training. The data, updated annually by means of global surveys, will provide insights that can lead to enhanced policy-setting, decision-making, benchmarking and operational optimization by industry and regulatory authorities at all levels.
